Don't Miss It or You Might Miss Something

We are just a short time away from the Relief Society broadcast and you won't want to miss it.  If you haven't been able to make it much in the past or just haven't made it a habit try to get there this time around. It really is worth our time.
You wouldn't want to miss another message like this:

Or a message from our Prophet that contains inspiring words like this:

"A young couple, Lisa and John, moved into a new neighborhood. One morning while they were eating breakfast, Lisa looked out the window and watched her next-door neighbor hanging out her wash.

“That laundry’s not clean!” Lisa exclaimed. “Our neighbor doesn’t know how to get clothes clean!”
John looked on but remained silent.

Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, Lisa would make the same comments.

A few weeks later Lisa was surprised to glance out her window and see a nice, clean wash hanging in her neighbor’s yard. She said to her husband, “Look, John—she’s finally learned how to wash correctly! I wonder how she did it.”

John replied, “Well, dear, I have the answer for you. You’ll be interested to know that I got up early this morning and washed our windows!”

Tonight I’d like to share with you a few thoughts concerning how we view each other. Are we looking through a window which needs cleaning? Are we making judgments when we don’t have all the facts? What do we see when we look at others? What judgments do we make about them?"

So determine to make it a point to participate this Saturday whether you watch/listen to it at home, head to a nearby stake center, or are lucky enough to sit in the Conference Center.  The messages will be inspired.  The Spirit will be present.  We will all learn something about ourselves and this journey we are on.  I am excited.

Here are some details from lds.org:

New Relief Society Book Available to All

painting
The book, Daughters in My Kingdom: The History and Work of Relief Society is now available to download as a PDF file.

LDS.org has this to say about the book:

"The teachings, stories, and examples in this history book will guide you in establishing priorities and practices in your life that will help increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and seek out and help those in need.
The history of Relief Society teaches the divine identity and infinite worth of daughters of God. It is a Spirit-filled story of strong, faithful, purposeful women who have served with little public recognition.

As you study this history you will see that our Heavenly Father knows His daughters, that He loves them, that He trusts them with sacred responsibilities, and that He guides them as they fulfill those responsibilities.

You are encouraged to share the book with others. Church members of all ages may use the book as a reference in lessons, talks, council meetings, and at home."

They have also created a site to help readers of the book and leaders in Relief Society know how to best use this great resource.  I'm excited to read and learn.

Celebrating a Birthday!

We are just a few days shy of the Birthday of the Relief Society, which was born on March 17, 1842. Our ward recently had our Birthday Activity to Celebrate the organization of this great Society. I am so grateful for the Relief Society, for the sisters that I am able to interact with, learn from, and lean on. I love this yearly reminder that we belong to a group that was organized by God and I love the reminder from Emma Smith that we are to do and be something extraordinary.

Let us continue to strengthen one another and to serve one another.

Getting Ready to Open Our Ears and Our Hearts: General Conference October 2010

So last night opened this week of listening to and hearkening to the Word of God.  I've already felt uplifted. I've already felt pushed to make changes.  I've already felt the great desire that General Conference brings to be better, to do more, and to drop unnecessary things out of my life.  The General Relief Society Meeting was wonderful. But there is so much more to come for ourselves, our families, and our spouses.

To watch and read highlights of the
Relief Society Meeting you can visit HERE.

What does your family do to prepare for Conference?
We usually print out various activities including: bingo, coloring pages, etc.  In the past I have created a list of links but this time around I have seen a list of great resources compiled at diapersanddivnity.com and decided to just direct you there.  (Thanks Steph!) There are packets for all different age groups and even activities that your children can participate in throughout this week even before conference begins.

What are some General Conference traditions that you have?
We just started a new tradition of turning off our TV for the week before Conference.  You can read more about our tradition HERE.

So now let's hear how you prepare and/or what traditions you have?

General Relief Society Meeting: September 2009

I am really looking forward to this meeting. There is always so much to glean from the wonderful messages shared. I just thought I'd post a reminder here that "the general Relief Society meeting will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009, in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City at 6:00 p.m. mountain daylight time". I'm a little late in posting this so that is TOMORROW!
I hope we will all take the time to listen to a "member of the First Presidency, as well as the members of the Relief Society general presidency." I always seem to come away feeling rejuvenated, more dedicated, and ready to tackle whatever comes my way. I am excited for a meeting just for women that allows a moment to reflect and recharge. Whoo-hoo!!!

Visiting and Home Teaching: A Serious Responsibility

I watched this video tonight (link below) and at some points it made me chuckle, and others moments I could relate, and it also caused me to think about how I am doing as a visiting teacher. There are definitely some things I can work on. Watch the video and enjoy it's many exaggerated moments but also reflect on and examine how you are doing as a visiting (or home) teacher.

I love this quote by Gordon B. Hinckley about Home and Visiting Teaching. It really puts into perspective how important our efforts are and what a big responsibility it is to be a Visiting or Home teacher:

"I hope that home teachers and visiting teachers will experience two things: first, the challenge of the responsibility that is in their great calling, and second, the sweetness of results from their work, particularly with those among us who are less active. I hope that these teachers will get on their knees and pray for direction, and then go to work to bring these wandering prodigals back into the fold of the Church. If home and visiting teachers respond to this challenge, I honestly believe that they will taste the sweet and wonderful feeling which comes of being an instrument in the hands of the Lord in leading someone back into activity in His church and kingdom.

"I am making a plea for us to reach out to our brethren and sisters who have known the beauty and the wonder of this restored gospel for a brief season and then for some reason have left it.

"May all home teachers recognize that they have an inescapable responsibility to go into the homes of the people and teach them to live the gospel principles more faithfully, to see that there is no iniquity or backbiting or evil speaking, to build faith, to see that the families are getting along temporally. That is a very serious responsibility; it really is. But it is not a heavy burden—it just takes a little more faith. It is worthy of our very best effort." (Instruments of the Lord," Ensign, March 1997.)

I hope that we all will determine to be better Home and Visiting Teachers - that we will recognize the serious responsibility that it is and it give our very best effort.

General Relief Society Meeting

So I really enjoyed the Relief Society Meeting on Saturday. I felt the Spirit stronger than I have felt it in a long time. I really enjoyed all of the talks. I felt inspired to do better, to be more devoted to Relief Society, to make going to the temple a greater priority, and to have a greater compassion and love for all women. I enjoyed the words of all of the wonderful sisters of the General Relief Society Presidency but I particularly got a lot out of President Uchtdorf's message.

He talked about how many of us often feel inadequate, discouraged, and weary. But then he offered a solution -God's Happiness which is the Greatest Happiness. He shared two characteristics of God that we should strive to emulate that will bring greater happiness- God Creates and God is Compassionate.

I really liked when he talked about creating. This was a different approach to bring happiness than you typically hear. He said that to create brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. He explained what the word create meant by saying that it is is to bring into existence something that did not exist before (a garden, smiles/laughter, a beautiful space in your home, etc.)

I really liked this...he said to take normal opportunities and to turn them into something of beauty in the world around us and in the world within.

Our opportunities to create things and to create and nourish talents are endless. His talk made me ask this question - do I undervalue my abilities? Let us all take opportunities to create.
Then he moved on to talk about compassion. I just wanted to share one line that really made me think - The number of prayers we say are important but the number of prayers we answer may be more important.

Now we have General Conference coming up this weekend and I am excited to receive more guidance and direction. If you look on the left side of the blog there is a link to watch conference online.
